Abstract:
Description:
The study concentrated on investigating the relationship between teacher factor (such as their attitude, belief and competency in fieldwork) and the school working conditions in affecting the extent fieldwork is used as a teaching strategy in geography. The study is mainly exploratory and descriptive. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the following research instruments: (i) a questionnaire (ii) interviews with selected geography teachers, geography Head of Department (HoDs), Principals as well as a curriculum officer in charge of geography education and (Hi) document analysis of the geography Brunei General Certificate of Education '0' Level syllabus and the examination papers of the last 5 years (2000-2004). The quantitative data were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS to extract descriptive statistic mainly frequency count and means. The result of the document analysis showed that most of the topics in the syllabus were suitable for fieldwork. The study recommends that fieldwork training to meet the needs of teachers be provided and that the discouraging factors be dealt with by the relevant authorities including the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the school authorities including Heads of Geography Departments (HoDs).
