Abstract:
This paper is an ethnographic account of the spiritual function of pengangun (a wedding
attendant) based on anthropological research in the Brunei-Muara district. It explores the
important role of women in wedding rituals and the ways in which their role has changed as a
consequence of modernization and Islamization.
