Abstract:
Description:
Homework has always considered as significantly related to students' motivation to learn, their attitudes and their academic achievement. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of introducing alternative types of homework on students. The target students selected were of about the same ability level so that two parallel classes taught by the same teacher could be chosen from each school, with one class selected as Control Group whilst the other class became the Experimental Group. The population sample for this study consisted of a total of 160 students from Menengah 1 (equivalent to Form 1) and 3 teachers. Stage 1 involved interviews with three Mathematics teachers (from both the Control and Experimental groups in each school), two Mathematics Heads of Department, and a Deputy Principal from one of the three schools concerned. In stage 2, the Mathematics teachers administered two Pre-Tests before the teaching of each of the two topics indentified - Introduction to Geometry, and Polygons. Whilst the Control Groups proved, unexpectedly, to be more able generally, there were substantial improvements gains in the completion rates and the success rates for the Experimental Groups who had attempted the Alternative Homeworks.
