Abstract:
Description:
The case study is an attempt to explore the policy directions of agriculture in the wake of the government's emphasis on food security. The "agribusiness" concept has been introduced by the government to foster and facilitate the development of agriculture in Brunei Darussalam. The Study proposes to look into the level of intervention required in order to facilitate the development of agriculture from food sufficiency, import substitution and security objectives to commercial enterprises. The case study shows that in order for this sector to take off, strong government commitment is required. There is also a need to identify and address the current constraints that might hinder the growth and development of this sector. It is also significant to recognize that the role and support of agricultural SMEs are paramount in order to achieve government's aspiration towards agribusiness. To achieve thriving and vibrant agribusiness, resources in the form of micro-credit, land, subsidies and support are required. The study reveals that the government needs to be more supportive and proactive in marketing the local produce locally and internationally. The involvement and collaboration of relevant stakeholders are prerequisites to ensure the growth and development of agribusiness in Brunei Darussalam.
