Abstract:
Hydrokinetic turbine is typically used to drive power production in rural communities, which are not connected to national grid electricity services. The interaction of the rotor and water determines the power generation of the hydrokinetic turbine. A suitable choice of the rotor in terms of its geometry has to be in placed to extract the most kinetic energy possible from the water and transform it into useful energy. The procedures in this study involved using ANSYS Fluent to perform Computational Fluid Dynamics [CFD] simulation to numerically simulate a newly designed [modified] small hydrokinetic turbine rotor.
Estimation of the performance of the blade design, such as, looking at its maximum power coefficient and tip speed ratio, as well as other related fluid dynamic analysis, such as flow field analysis and pressure distributions will be presented and discussed. According to the research findings, the newly designed (modified version] small hydrokinetic turbine can generate approximately 170W of power at the optimal tip speed ratio when it is operated in a current with a flow velocity of 1m/s. This is sufficient for operating LED lighting and ceiling fans, among other applications. This simulation results highlights the practicality and efficiency of hydrokinetic energy in real-world scenarios.
