This paper is a case study of Indonesian domestic maids or referred to locally as amah
working in Brunei Darussalam. It is an account of the lives, hardships, difficulties, and
dreams of five eastern Javanese women, and how their position as domestic maids
abroad has changed the dynamics of gender and power relations in their traditionally
patriarchal households in Java.
